TOUR PHOTOS

The Hotel in Lynmouth, home for the week to the chunderfest that passed for Elliott's 1988 tour. Halfway up a steep hill - not the best place to get back to after a night on the tiles ...

The tour is notorious for the outbreak of 'Devon Belly' that afflicted just about everyone in the touring party - playing or non-playing. Only Steve Swindell escaped, and he promptly got it on his return home !

North Molton CC, scene of a thrilling last-ball victory over our hosts. The last ball was most notable for the fact that, with one run required for a win, facing batsman Adrian Kearney played a defensive shot which landed at his own feet. He then tried to return the ball to the opposing silly point fielder, oblivious to the fact that the non-striker, Steve Swindell, had by now reached his end and was screaming 'RUN' in his ear ! Adrian promptly dropped the ball, ran for all he was worth and the victory was complete.

The Valley of the Rocks, home of Lynton & Lynmouth CC. One of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the country.

Play under way at the Valley of the Rocks.

Opening batsman Paul Etheridge managed (once again) to be dismissed by the first ball of our innings. Spectators had to dodge the flying Etheridge bat as he returned to the pavilion amid a flurry of curses, and he then spent the rest of the innings sulking behind a rock halfway up the hill.

The antiquated stone Pavilion at the Valley of the Rocks. No hot-and-cold running water here !

The Devon Belly outbreak was at its height during this match, so almost every member of the squad got on the field at some point as a substitute for a stricken team-mate (all except Graham Williams, absent from this photo as he spent the entire match noisily dying under a blanket in front of the pavilion)

At one point, a visiting coachload of Japanese tourists were treated to the sight of Ian Crickmore losing his lunch over the fence at the side of the pitch as they alighted from their coach. Presumably they thought that ritual chundering was all part of the quaint English game of 'Clicket' ...
